Denton Haunts

Some folks come to historic Denton, Texas and never want to leave --- ever! Denton Haunts is a walking tour of the courthouse square. Come hear our local ghost stories! Admission is $10, and is not recommended for children under 10. Summer tour hours are scheduled for Thursaday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 9:00 p.m., meeting on the Courthouse-on-the Square lawn by John B. Denton’s Grave. Passion, Art, Community: Denton, Texas, in Word and Image

The City of Denton Public Art Committee and The Greater Denton Arts Council present Passion, Art, Community: Denton, Texas, in Word and Image. In 2011, the Public Art Committee commissioned Texas Poet Laureate karla k. morton to write 25 poems about the history of Denton. The Committee then commissioned artists from the Denton community to create works of art inspired by karla’s poems. The result is a stunning exhibition and book – Passion, Art, Community: Denton, Texas, in Word and Image. The exhibition, on display in the Meadows Gallery at the Center for the Visual Arts, features original works of art. The works include paintings, photographs, prints, and collages. Each piece is accompanied by the poem that inspired it. The opening reception on August 30, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. will also include a book signing by karla k. morton and the artists. Books will be available for purchase at the reception. The exhibition runs from August 26 - October 28, 2012. Gallery hours are Tues-Sun, 1:00-5:00 pm

Anglo-Saxon Herbal Healing Practices

Are there healing remedies the Anglo-Saxons knew about that we could use today? Join us at the Emily Fowler Central Library, Saturday, September 1, 2012, at 10 am as Dr. Susan Perry shares the results of her research of the Anglo-Saxon Lancnunga a herbal healing text and a book of superstitions. Her presentation will highlight the superstitious and beneficial herbal remedies found within the text. Dr. Susan Perry is a member of the English faculty at Capella University, Texas Woman’s University and the University of Washington D.C. Her research for this project was written about in the Education section of the London Times in 2001. This program is co-Sponsored by the Denton Herb Society. Denton Community Market

The Denton Community Market is every Saturday May – October, 9am – sellout. The market is local art and produce market located @ Carroll Blvd. and Mulberry St. near downtown Denton, Texas. We are a community gathering space alive with music, local food and produce, locally produced handmade arts and crafts, on-site food, local business, community groups and more! We encourage you to come to any of our market days. Our 2012 market season begins on Saturday, May 5th and continues through October 27th. Rockin' Lock-In

Kids in grades 1-5 can rock the new school year with a night of fun and adventure! Kids will compete in an outdoor scavenger hunt before taking on the Adrenaline Rush Obstacle Course and a giant bounce house.  Then, kids will make fun crafts, play Wii Band Hero on the giant screen, flash light tag, and roast marshmallows.  Before ending the night, kids will enjoy a root beer float and popcorn while watching a movie on the giant screen.  The event is supervised and boys and girls sleep in separate areas.  Kids need to bring a sleeping bag, a pillow, and toiletries.  Dinner will not be provided, but a light breakfast will be offered.  The cost is $15 per kid.  Register by Aug. 30.  www.dentonparks.com or 940-349-7275
