elcome to the Spring 2010 edition of Denton Live, the official guide for visitors and locals alike to discover the best in upcoming arts and entertainment events right here in Denton.
Spring ushers in some of the biggest, most exciting and unusual events on our calendar. The Denton Arts & Jazz Festival attracts 200,000 people over a three-day period, offering seven incredible music stages, individual and group performances by 2,500 musicians, food and fun for everyone. We have the Denton Air Fair out at the Denton Airport, the Dog Days of Denton in Quakertown Park, the Cinco de Mayo festival, Juneteenth celebration, the 25th anniversary of the Texas Storytelling Festival, and on and on. What’s more, all of these events are FREE and open to the public. Last year’s premier of the “NX35” multi-day music festival was a wonderful success, playing on Denton’s national renown as one of the cutting edge locales for new musicians and groups. NX35 is planning to feature nationally important headliners and to greatly expand its size and scope this year to include not only the many indoor venues in our downtown area music/arts corridor, but also a new significant outdoor event as well. For two of the last three years, Denton, Texas, has been one of the top 10 fastest growing cities in the United States*. At the same time, it has been declared one of the 100 Best Places to Live by Money magazine, has had its own University of North Texas chosen as one of the few “Universities to Watch” in 2009-10 by U.S. News & World Report, and received national and international accolades for being a leader in using wind energy, methane-to-electricity power generation and for achievement in environmental sustainability initiatives. Denton’s historic downtown has been a model for younger cities to copy for its charm and vibrance. Yes, Denton is unique. We are a safe city, a caring city, but also a “hip” city as well. We have it all right here in Denton. Welcome! Mark A. Burroughs, Mayor *For cities of at least 100,000 in population.
